Women Leaders Aim for Peace

Yesterday’s midterm elections saw women winning more seats than ever before in the U.S. House after a record number of female candidates were on ballots across the country. As women are moving to the forefront of creating peace in American society, let us reflect on how much women have achieved and how they seek to push society toward peace.

Historic Firsts

As of early Wednesday morning, 96 women had been elected to the House, surpassing the the current Congress, which held the record for 84 women. In the senate, women could gain one more seat in the Senate, potentially surpassing its current record of 23 women.

The 2018 midterm elections saw women making history in the White House in a multitude of ways: the first Native American women (Democrats Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland) were elected to Congress; the first Muslim women (Democrats Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar) were elected to Congress; Tennessee and Arizona elected their first female senators; South Dakota elected its first woman governor (Republican Kristi Noem); and Texas elected its first Hispanic women to Congress.

Looking to the Future

These are indeed historic achievements that bring hope to the future of American politics. With women gaining more leadership positions, we must have confidence in their abilities to be just as competent as, if not more than, male leaders. Having something new to bring to the table is never a bad thing.

With more and more female voices being heard throughout our nation, we are reminded that as Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon has noted, this is an era in which women must take chances and move toward peace by leading. Again, she emphasizes that peace starts with us.
