This Veteran’s Day, November 11, marks 100 years since the end of World War I. A hundred years ago, the soldiers of many nations were fighting to bring peace back to this world. But a hundred years later, we still do not have peace. Our country is engulfed in disunity. We find ourselves asking, “Will this ever end? How do we bring peace?”
The theme of our rally, Peace Starts With Me, was as relevant 100 years ago as it is today: It starts with us.
But how do we “start” peace? What does that entail?
Sometimes it seems like we are just a single person, or a tiny group among 7.5 billion people in a world plagued by injustice, selfishness, evil, and corruption. But even as a single individual, you have the power to influence the people around you on a daily basis, which goes on to impact more than you’d have imagined. You can start creating peace now, and it starts with the little things.
Compliment someone just because you can. Appreciate a kind gesture and return the favor. Don’t blame another person for your circumstances, even if they are at fault.
Most things in our world are contagious, including peace and evil. And if our common goal is to bring peace, then we all have the power to bring it with all of our interactions.
A commonly cited, yet overwhelmingly deep quote comes to mind. Our dear brother Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
This is the essence of the upcoming Peace Starts With Me rally. We will come together to start peace, to spread peace, and to share love. We will honor multiple veteran’s organizations in order to support those who have served and loved our nation. Through multiple performances by award-winning musicians, through multiple inspirational messages by the top peacemakers of our world, we will see that peace truly does start with us. And where does peace start? It starts with us, and it starts with love.
